Dutch down syndrom sings US to victory
What the Netherlands definitely lack is patriotism. The Dutch are generally as apathetic as possible when it comes to their country. Yes they are proud of Heineken, the Josti band and some Dutch will tell you with a sense of arrogance that they do live 30 meters under sea level and how much better they deal with water than the US did after Katrina. However, do the Dutch have proper pride in their country? No, not so much. All liberties are taken for granted and “freedom” sounds so incredibly ‘Braveheart’. But most of all there were the Germans, who were the last rulers to tell citizens on “their” soil how important patriotism is and how they (or as they put it “we”) are the “greatest country in the world” and the “greatest people in the world.” The general thought after 1945 was “Nein danke.” No more patriotism for the Europeans.
However, the last country on earth telling their population how their country is the best in the world and probably also in outer space is the US of A. Never too bothered with comparison against other countries or milky ways, all US kids get taught this sense of superiority and pledge their allegiance. Which is (no offence) pretty similar to what this certain historical figure made his younger citizens do. I wonder if this is why Europeans are generally disgusted by Americans putting their hands on their hearts and pledging allegiance. It might be something else, or maybe Europeans should just start doing the same. We will have to make up a pledge of allegiance to the European flag (use the comments for suggestions) and start singing the European anthem (do we have one?) at the start of every single event. Feeling superior kind of kills any debate, but it would make life so much easier!
Until we actually do have a European anthem we will just have a kick-ass member of the Dutch Jostiband sing the US national anthem!
Holding our hands across our hearts and reciting a pledge isn’t what makes use feel superior to Europeans, consuming everything ever made and garbage disposals in every home does. Oh and we have big bombs also, “cheers”.
Amen!
